28. G. BURTON 1986-

Geoff Burton joined Bexley from Bexleyheath Sports Club in 1974. He was already an experienced slow left arm bowler but few could have foreseen the outstanding success he would achieve with Bexley, breaking numerous records over the years. In all 1st XI, Sunday A and mid-week matches he has taken over 1000 wickets, at an average of 17 runs each. This is the highest aggregate of any bowler in the club's history. He took 1OO wickets in a season three times, another record, and he is also the only player to have taken 100 wickets and scored 500 runs in the same season, (1979).
In 1990 he was a member of the Bexley team which won the AKCC Adscene Trophy. In 1991, when captain of the 2nd XI, he set a new Kent League record for the most wickets in a season, 67.
Geoff also figured in another memorable, if uncomfortable, incident. In 1975, while playing against Dulwich, he was hit for six sixes in an over. The 'culprit' was David Hookes, then aged 20, who went on to become an Australian Test player. As Geoff had played for Dulwich for seven years in the early part of his career. he was not short of advice in the bar afterwards!
Geoff was Captain of the 1st Xl in 1987-1988 and Chairman in [979-1985, and provides a voice of authority in committee.
