21. S. E. LAWRENCE 1955-1962

For fifty years, from 1923-1973, the manager of Martin's (now Barclays) Bank in Bexley High Street was also the Hon. Treasurer of the cricket club. In this way, five managers: B. Brooks. B. S. Noakes, S. E. Lawrence, A. L. Kirk and J. A. Jaques were successively Treasurers.

Sidney Lawrence was Treasurer from 1937 until 1957 and his 21 years is the longest period in office of any Bexley Treasurer.
In 1955, the year of the 150th Anniversary of the famous match against Kent, Sidney Lawrence was elected President. Although of a quiet and self-effacing disposition, he played a leading role in the Anniversary celebrations.
In I957, when he retired from the Bank, he moved from the district to Folkestone. but such was the esteem in which he was held that he was asked to continue as President, even though no longer able to take an active part in the Club's affairs.
The photograph shows Mr Lawrence on the occasion of his retirement from the Bank.
