Bexley CC - Bertie Joel Cup Champions 2019

A winning cup campaign ended on Sunday 15th September at Blackheath's Rectory Field ground. Facing Bexley were Cambridge CC, who had finished mid-table in the East Anglian Premier League. On a very sunny September morning Adam Riley won the toss and elected to have a bat. A large group of Bexley supporters, at least 80 in total, made the short trip to Blackheath and were not to be disappointed.

A positive start by the Bexley openers, Calum Basey and Adam Riley, took the score along to 57 before the first wicket went down. Followed by another quick wicket, Adam Ball took the game to Cambridge scoring a run a ball 64. Calum and Bally built a good partnership until Calum was bowled with the score on 154-3. Matt Stiddard continued the 100% run rate hitting a quick 33 and Shaun Evans replacing Calum, a very quick 24 including three good maximums. It was left to Jack Bell and Freddie Foster to see the innings through to the close with a healthy 238 - 6 on the board. Cambridge would have to go some to match that total against a very reliable Bexley bowling unit.

Following lunch/tea refreshments (the supporters were already well refreshed) the run chase was on. Cambridge soon found themselves 19-3 with their 1,2 and 4 batters back in the hutch, two wickets for Jason Benn and one for Jas Singh. The rest of the wickets would be shared between Bally and Freddie, who made light work of the Cambridge batting order. Bally returned figures of 4-11 off six overs and Freddie 3-1 off 5.3 overs. The Bexley fielding was outstanding and included three catches for Calum. In 25.3 overs it was game over, much to the delight of both the players and supporters. A well deserved cup win following what has been a very good season for not only the 1st XI, but for the Club generally. The celebrations began and continued later upon the return of the winning team to Manor Way. Congratulations to Adam and the team and all those who have represented Bexley Cricket Club in this competition.
